History of Wexford Celtic



1968

Wexford Celtic was formed on Sept 13th 1968, at a meeting in St Michael's Club, Green Street, Wexford Town.

The following people were elected for the committee:

  • CHAIRMAN - Nick Delaney
  • HON SECRETARY - Nick Rossiter
  • HON TREASURE - John Lappin
Committee - Thomas Butler, Tom O`Hara, Oliver Larkin and Nick Kavanagh.

2nd December 1968

In less than 3 months - Nick Rossiter, Oliver Larkin and Nick Kavanagh resigned their positions.

  • New Secretary - Tom O`Hara.
    • New Committee Members - Joe Maloney, tommy Ryan and Sean Tyghe.

26th December 1968

Tom O` Rouke became the clubs first President

1970

Celtic played their first game at the racecourse in the Cup Final. They won 1-0 against Nawrik Rangers, Tony Crosbie scored the all important goal. This game was the first of many over the years to be played at the race course, Wexford Celtic's new home.

1973

A Celtic selection played League of Ireland side shamrock Rovers at the racecourse, the result end in a 2-6 win for the visitors.

1974

Celtic decided to enter the Leinster Junior League and were accepted in the division one league. As there was no Premier div at this time, this division had the leading teams from all the counties, Laois, Offaly, Kildare, Westmeath and Tipperary among others. Celtic done well and finished 5th of the 12 sides.Owing to the traveling involed we decide to go back to the Wexford League for the coming season.

1976

Wexford Celtic amalgamated with Wexford Town schoolboys - The name of the club changed to Town Celtic. In 2001 the name was changed back to its original name of Wexford Celtic.

1978

Mick Hurley was honoured by the Wexford Branch of the Referees Society, when he was chosen as their `player of the year`.

1980

Nacey Brennan was selected as the Powers sports star of the year for soccer in Wexford. In Easter of this year Celtic went on a trip to Wales playing 3 games, drawing 2 and winning 1.

1982

From the formation of the club, celtic members have had to pay `subs` to keep the club financially solvent. At the beginning, the subs for junior playing members were 1 shilling weekly (5p), over the years the subs have risen considerably. In the season 1979/80 subs were collected monthly quarterly , £7 per quarter, or £28 per year.At the AGM of 1982, it was agreed that players should pay a registration fee of £5 and also match fees of £1 per game.

1983
Player of the Year

  • Tim McGrath was selected as player of the year for the 1st team.
    • John Creane was runner up.
  • Jos furlong was selected as Reserve team player of the year.
    • Paddy Fitzpatrick was runner up.

McGrath and Fitzpatrick were to become well know names as their sons went on to sign for Scottish premier league club CELTIC, the two lads also named Tim and Paddy later on came home and played for our Wexford league club.

1986

At the AGM the committee passed a motion to increase the `subs` to £2 per game.

1987

Celtic have won the Wexford District Cup on 3 occasions 1970, 1980 and 1987. Town Celtic win Wexford Cup for the third time against Ross Celtic after much hipe surrounded the match because of a local Priest and the GAA.

The game itself went down to the wire when Nacey Brennan in the 91st minute rose to head pass Ross Celtic goalkeeper John Roche.With Ross Celtic just a week ago been beaten for the league Title in the last minute this was a bitter pill to swallow.Minutes before Brennan had scored he was involed in a clash of heads with the Ross Celtic goalkeeper that left him in a dazed condition and had to be hospilalize after the game.(Still don`t think he ever came out of that daze.)Man of the Match on the day was Mick Carthy.

1989

The club celebrated their 21st Anniversary.A weekend of festivities were organized and were a huge sucess.Past members were all invited to attend.Nicky Hore came back from the USA.Padraig Murphy came from Wales., and of course many more from all over Ireland.Highlight of the weekend was the 21st re-union at the Talbot Hotel, former Man Utd and Ireland Star Pat Crerand was guest of honour for the night.

Awards were made to 11 players considered to be the best players over the 21 years: Tommy Walsh, John Creane, Nacey Brennan, Jimmy Roberts, Eoin Wheeler, Padraig Murphy, Mick Hurley, Noel Morris, Tony Crosbie, Toddy Wilson and Mick Carty. The club also purchased their present grounds at Sinnotstown lane (in partnership with DMP) 11,1/2 acres were bought for £15,500.What a steal!

1994

Town Celtic as we were know back then won the Youths Division 2 League Tile. Losing no matches on their way to victory.

2000

Wexford Celtic First team win their first cup final since 1986 when we beat Campile Utd in the Neil O`Sullivan by 2 goals to nil, scorers on the day were Boo Hore and Thady Redmond.The first team also made their long awaited return to the Premier Division after a seven year by finishing 2nd in the league.

The Ladies team also won their cup final against Slaney Celtic after a tense 3-2 win and then went on too do the double when they won the Division 2 league by a mile even beating one team 18-0.

2001

Wexford Celtic First team are back among the Premier division teams after a long lay off of 7 years. The new all weather training pitch will also be in use this season.

On a sadder note Brendan O`Conner a Wexford Celtic player died while on work in America, Brendan Kept goal for Town Celtic for a great number of years and will be sadly missed.
