Father Tommy

GAA Ban Medal Winning Priest

The Co. Wexford priest caught in a tug-of-loyalty between soccer and gaelic football was planning a summer holiday today after a triumphant end of the soccer season with his team mates from Wexford Celtic, when they won the bank of lreland Cup final in Rosslare.

Celtic victory was tinged with sadness for Fr.Tommy Brennan Beacause there would be no gaelic football for him this summer. The former county minor footballer was suspended for 6 months when he opted to play soccer instead of turning out for the Sarsfields GAA Club in the first round of the championship.

Paper Quote "l will probably go on holidays instead of playing with the Sarsfields this summer, I now have no sporting commitments." he said.

Fr. Brennan who is secretary to GAA , said he had decided not to appeal the ban.
"lt was totally a decision for me and it has nothing to do with the bishop," said Fr, Brennan." l think the whole thing was a storm in a teacup but a meal was made of it because l was a priest. Canon law has nothing on the GAA," joked the 26 year old who yesterday swopped his clerical garb for the blue and white of town Celtic after saying his usual Sunday mass.

"lf we keep winning like this l`ll definitely stay with soccer." said Fr. Brennan after his side defeated New Ross Celtic by a single goal in the last seconds of the game. "This was my first year playing soccer and the reason l played was there was nothing to do over the winter months.I couldn`t let Celtic down for the final and the Sarfields were only starting in the championship and are still in with a chance," he said.

GAA Response

The GAA claim that the suspension was imposed on Fr. Tommy because he broke a club rule by not turning up for the match and not because he played soccer. The rule stipulates that, in the event of a clash, a players first loyalty has to be with the GAA.
