The advert says its the kind
of water sport you can tell your mother about. Well...I suppose it is
then. But that quip does not nearly adequately describe what it is like
to be a member of the new gay swim group in Dublin.
I have been swimming in
some fashion for most of my life in all sorts of places under all sorts
of conditions and to every manner of success and failure. Our wee group
(affectionately called the gswim group) provides a comfort zone for me
in Dublin not paralleled in my long swimming experience. Its a group of
guys presented in all shapes and sizes, heights and weights, ages and
nationalities and dreams and aspirations. Sometimes we swim like
champions. Sometimes we wade.
Sometimes we chat and
sometimes we want to be alone in the water. A lot of times we laught
right out loud and other times we don't. We never have a really proper,
organized workout for the whole group, but we are pretty organized when
it come right down to it. We all understand the shyness about grouping
together nearly naked with guys would mightn't know too well at first
blush. But we would like you all to forget all about that and grab your
swim suit and come join us. Because, in reality, we are JUST like you.
We all have our own problems and our own worries. We all have our own
questions and concerns. We all have our own body type. We understand
that in the real world, its not possible to like everyone equally. But,
we know that it is possible to TREAT everyone equally.
And that's the real
beauty of the gswim group. That sense of being treated equally makes you
feel like you belong...with anyone and everyone...at anytime and
everywhere. And twice a week, we try to make that happen for us. We'd be
chuffed to make it happen for you.
